But Sir Sidney loaded the bases, and with one out on came Worrell to save. Worrell, though, following a strikeout, left a fast ball high to Brad Wilkerson, and he belted a grand slam walk-off home run to defeat SF 4-2, making Ponson 0-3 as a Giant, and continuing the Giants August woes Mon 8-18 - Well, the road trip ended as bad as possible. 0-6 total, 0-4 vs the Expos, and SF is swept in the season series, losing all seven games to Montreal. Monday afternoon, Hermanson pitched well, allowing just one run over his six innings, but that plus 2 in the seventh and one in the eighth did in SF, who's bats were terribly quiet on the road trip, as SF scored a total of ten runs over the six games, and four against the Expos. Thu 8-21 - Jason Schmidt pitched a great 8 innings, 3 hits - 1 walk - 7 K's, but Alou decided to use Worrell in the ninth with a 3-0 lead. As it turned out, it was a mistake. Worrell was shaky hit hard and allowed the Braves to tie the game (though an Aurilia error didn't help with a boot). This one also went 10 innings, and in the bottom of the 10th, following a Grissom strikeout, the first pitch to Barry Bonds was deposited to center field for another Walk-off homer, his 2nd in 3 days. SF sweeps not-so-Hotlanta... The Marlins visit SF... Fri - 8-22 - The big matchup between Sir Sidney Ponson v phenom Dontrelle Willis was won by Ponson, thanks to SF's 5-run sixth inning. Sat 8-30 - Barry Bonds returned to the lineup and actually made all the difference. First, Rich Aurilia hit a solo homer to left in the 1st inning. In the fourth, it was Barry's turn, and he hit one 400 feet to right field. That would be enough to give Randy Johnson the loss, as Jerome Williams pitched into the ninth before handing the ball to Worrell for the save. A ground ball brought a run across for AZ, but Worrell stopped AZ and SF wins 2-1... Sun 8-31 - In the twilight matchup, Jason Schmidt won his career-high 14th game, as SF beat Arizona 3-1. Wed 9-3 - In a wild affair, SF beats Colorado 7-6 to sweep the short series. Rich Aurilia started things off well for SF, hitting a grand slam a few hours after going 4 for 4 on his birthday. But Kirk Rueter kept giving up the long ball, four of 'em, and soon it was 6-5 Rockies. Going into the bottom of the ninth, a sac fly by Alfonzo brought in pinch-runner Eric Young from third for the Giants victory. Magic Number is 12... D'backs last visit to SF for 2003 - Fri - 9-5 - Jerome Williams took a 1-1 game into the seventh, where a couple of D'backs got on base. With 2 out, and a run in making it 2-1 AZ, a fly ball was caught wonderfully by Marquis Grissom in short center field, but the umpire ruled, very incorrectly, that he trapped it. That unwound the Giants, who ended up losing 8-1 to the D'backs, with six runs coming after that BLOWN CALL. Sounds like a game to dispute to me... Sat 9-6 - In a game that went to the eleventh inning, SF got their first hit since the fourth, and then got three walks on their way to a 5-4 victory over Arizona, winning in their last at-bat for the 22nd time in 2003. Arizona got one back in the fifth, then five of their own in the eighth, sparked by a Steve Finley 2-RBI double. He went 4-5 on the day. Ponson gave up 4 earned over his six innings, but the relief simply allowed too many baserunners late to doom the Giants, as they lose 9-6 to Arizona... Giants last ever visit to The Murph in San Diego - Tue 9-9 - On a day that SF announced that Jesse Foppert would undergo 'Tommy John' surgery and miss all of next season, the Giant batters went homer happy against the Padres. San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the second, but homers by SF in the 3rd, 4th, 2 in the 7th and one in the ninth helped SF drop their magic number to 10. Barry Bonds had 2 singles and an intentional pass. Corriea earns the victory... SF's Magic Number dropped to 7 with the Dodger loss. Notable about the series is that Barry Bonds didn't homer, and Qualcomm was his best non-SF homer hitting park... Milwaukee visits SF - Fri 9-12 - Jason Schmidt was once again on top of his game, going 7.2 innings, striking out 12 and allowing an earned run, en route to his 15th win. The offense helped with their little-ball special, scoring four in the first, 1 in the sixth, and 3 in the eighth, as the Giants cruised to an 8-2 win, and hit just one extra base hit on the night, a ground-rule double. Magic Number is SIX... Sat 9-13 - Richie Seston hit 2 2-run homers to put the Brewers ahead, and after another run it was 5-0 going into the bottom of the eighth. But SF woke up. Bonds hit a Splash Homer, Alfonzo hit a homer, and and after Galarrago got on base, Neifi Perez cracked a homer. Just like that it was 5-4 Brew Crew. In the ninth, SF held, and had the bases loaded with one out. But Snow struck out, and Perez grounded out. SF had a chance, but couldn't pull it off, losing 5-4... Sun 9-14 - Sunday afternoon, it was a game of single runs. No team could ever get more than one an inning, and SF was always playing catch-up. Except for extra innings. In the eleventh and tied at 4, with the bases loaded and 2 out, late inning replacement Todd Linden hit a single back up the middle to bring home the winning run for the Giants, and they defeat Milwaukee, 5-4. SF wins their ninetieth game of the season and drop the magic number to FIVE... Tue 9-16 - Barry Bonds clubbed his 43 HR of the year (#656 lifetime) in bottom of the fifth for SF's fourth run of the night. Starter Jerome Williams threw 7 innings of shutout ball before allowing a solo homer to Khalil Greene to lead off the eighth. Felipe's revolving cast of relievers closed out San Diego, including Worrell, who allowed a solo homer, for a final of 4-2 SF. Los Angeles also lost, so the Magic Number is TWO!... Wed 9-17 - This magical night didn't start so hot. Starter Jason Schmidt had two terrible innings, and SF found themselves down 3-0. But in the bottom of the second and third innings, respectively, Galarraga and Grissom each hit line drive home runs to left to put SF up 4-3. SF tacked on 2 more in the fifth, 1 in the sixth, and 1 more in the eighth to go up 8-3. Schmidt for his part, settled down and struck out 11 batters over the next five innings, all swinging strikeouts. Nathan, Eyre and Rodriguez closed the Padres down in the late innings and SF wins 8-3 - LA loses at home to Arizona - and SF WINS THE WEST!!! They went wire-to-wire to do so!!!... Thu 9-18 - The day after the clinch, SF was a understandably hungover, and put in a lackluster performance in the afternoon finale versus the Padres. SF visits La-La Land - Fri 9-19 - SF got some early runs thanks to two Dodger errors, and LA would be playing catch-up all night. SF kept LA at bay, and put the game out of reach for good in the seventh inning, when Barry Bonds hit a solo homer to left-center field. Kevin Brown left after 5 innings, tagged with 3 earned. His ERA against SF this year was over 5. One bad incident, an SF fan was shot in the lot following the game. Not good. SF wins 6-4...
