2005 Recap: Well, 2005 surely stunk for every team in the NL West. Even San Diego, who won the West, could not have been pleased with their season, ending up just 82-80. SF made a late run, following the return of Barry Bonds, and with a week to go were just 3 games back of the Padres. But SF would go to San Diego and lose 3-4, including the Padres' clincher. After that, a hobbling Bonds shut it down to give his knee some rest. He really looked in pain when in left field, and was limping most of the time. It was quite sad to watch, really. The addition of Randy Winn near the trading deadline was a great move. He is a class player. Period. I hope he's a Giant for a long time.
With that awful season behind us, we must look to 2006. Already, following the White Sox World Series win (!!!), the Giants and some players made moves. The Giants picked up options on Jason Schmidt and Randy Winn, and reportedly made an offer to Scott Eyre. Player opting to remain Giants, per their contracts, include Moises Alou, Ray Durham and La Troy Hawkins. Lefty Jeff Fassero was re-signed by the team. Others already singed for 2006 are Barry Bonds, Edgardo Alfonzo, Armando Benitez, Mike Matheny and Pedro Feliz. Outfield prospect Dan Ortmeier had his fall ball season in the Arizona Fall League shut down with a tender wrist.
Late Nov update: Scott Eyre signed with the Cubs for a reported 2 years $11mil deal - good luck, Scotty. Longtime Assistant GM under Brian Sabean, one Mr. Ned Coletti, has migrated to the dark side, in that inferno where I live, Los Angeles, where Mr Coletti can count Mr McCourt's parking receipts.
Dec news: Todd Worrell rejoins SF as a set-up man. He left for Philly a couple of years back, and was traded to Arizona last season... Righty hurler LaTroy Hawkins was traded with cash to Baltimore for lefty Steve Kline... Norwich Navigators, SF's AA team in Connecticut, has a new name, The Connecticut Defenders.
Dec 8 update: First, on Wednesday, SF cut ties with JT Snow, declining Arbitration with the veteran first baseman. SF followed that move on Thursday with the signing of San Diego 1B/OF Mark Sweeney at a steep discount compared to what Snow would've commanded... JT, You are and will always be a San Francisco Giant... SF also declined arbitration with Brett Tomko, who had troubles, but really wanted to remain a Giant. Good luck, Brett...
mid-Dec. SF signs Matt Morris, formerly of the Cardinals, to a three year deal. SF was Morris' first pick, so let's hope the righty is all the Giants need him to be... Also of note, the Dodgers, now GM's by former SF ass't Ned Coletti, signed former Giant and fan favorite, third baseman Bill Mueller, who formerlly played for new Blue manager Grady Little in Frank McCourt's favorite city, Boston...
