SF signs star pitcher Barry Zito to the richest pitcher contract ever, singing the former Oakland Athletic to a 7-year $126 million deal...

Barry Bonds is set to return to the Giants in pursuit of Henry Aaron's Home Run Record.

SF loses free-agent pitcher Jason Schmidt to the Dodgers. Sorry Jason, you were great, but now - you suck. Did it have to be LA? sheesh...

SF finds their man. Bruce Bochy, manager of San Diego for the last decade or so, is SF's new manager for 2007, signing a 3-year deal. You can see the nice pic by Jose Sanchez/AP - capturing the moment. Bochy looks good in the Orange and Black. Sorry San Diego, I know the players are sad to see Bruce move north, but opportunity knocks.

In other news, longtime trainer Stan Conte resigned and has resurfaced with the Evil Blue.

Condolences to Lance Niekro and his family, on the passing of his dad, knuckleballer Joe Niekro, 61, following a brain aneurysm. Joe is the brother of Phil, of course, a notorious knuckleballer in his own right...

Finally, congrats to the St Louis Cardinals for winning the 2006 World Series, 4 games to 1 over Detroit. The last time Tony LaRussa won a World Series, I was there, 1989 at the 'Stick, when the Athletics swept the Giants in the earthquake-delayed series...

2006 notes:

SF had a TERRIBLE last few weeks of the season and ended way down in the NL West. A diappointing end to the season. SF had a chance, then -poof- they just gave up. Felipe Alou will not be retained as Manager. Goodbye Felipe, and thanks for all your service to the Giants over the years.
